Power Survey at Billy Mitchell

Two objectives: 1) Profile the power consumption of the SODAR and its control computer. 2) Lower the height of the Sodar antenna. Conclusions: The SODAR power consumption is asymmetric between the positive and negative 13.5V sources. The quiescent SODAR power consumption was 12.2W continuous for the -13.5V supply and 24.3W continuous for the +13.5v supply. The +13.5V power consumption during SODAR measurement was 29.7W continuous and 47.3W peak. The -13.5V power consumption during SODAR measurement was 18.9W continuous and 39.1W peak. The inverter quiescent power consumption is 1.1W continuous at +16.8V. The laptop quiescent power consumption at +16.8V is 24.4W continuous and 50.5W peak. The laptop power consumption during SODAR measurement at +16.8V was 24.4W continuous. The laptop does not draw more power while the SODAR is in measurement mode. The total (SODAR and laptop) continuous power consumption during SODAR measurement was 73W. The total (SODAR and laptop) peak power consumption was 137W.

With the SODAR in measurement mode, the -12V power supply reads 2.6 Amp spikes during signal emission.
IMG_6910.MOV
With the SODAR in measurement mode, the +12 power supply reads 3.8 Amp spikes during signal emission.
IMG_6911.MOV
With the SODAR in measurement mode, the recording meter shows 3.5 Amp spikes on the +12V side of the supply during signal emissions.
IMG_6914.MOV
With the SODAR in measurement mode, the recording meter shows 2.8 Amp spikes on the -12V side of the supply during signal emissions.
IMG_6915.MOV
A 2.8 Amp spike is visible on the recording screen on the -12V side during measurement.
